The Role of Referees in Billiards: Authority, Controversies, and Respect

In the game of billiards, like in many other sports, referees play a crucial role. They are responsible for keeping track of points, monitoring shot times, ensuring adherence to rules such as the 40-second limit for shots, cleaning the balls upon request, and checking for fouls. However, one of the most contentious aspects of billiards is the decision-making process surrounding whether a shot is counted as a point or not. This particular aspect sets 3 Cushion Billiard apart from other sports.

In this unique scenario, the players' opinions hold more weight than the referee's judgment. For instance, if the referee deems a shot as a point, but both players disagree, the point is not accepted. From my perspective, this rule can be seen as problematic, as it diminishes the confidence and authority of the referee. Numerous examples exist where players engage in discussions and disputes with one another, disregarding the referee's decision.

However, in my opinion, it would be more appropriate to follow the standard approach found in other games, where players are expected to respect the referee's decision, even if they believe it to be incorrect. Encouraging a culture of respect towards referees would eliminate debates during and after games. By doing so, the authority and integrity of the referee would be upheld, ensuring a fair and consistent playing environment.

It is important to note that these are personal comments and opinions on the matter. Different perspectives and experiences may lead to varying viewpoints on the role and influence of referees in billiards or any other sport.
